Hi! I’m Susan Ainley, the hostess with the mostest for the Downtown Winnipeg Tours!
As the tour guide for the Downtown Tours, I have the great honour and privilege of taking participants to some of my very favourite food and drink establishments, while sharing with them a little of our rich history as well as the many things that are happening in the heart of our city.
I moved back to Winnipeg three years ago, after spending over a decade in Red Deer, Alberta. I rented a place downtown, got a job walking distance to my home and spent my free time exploring downtown Winnipeg and surrounding areas on foot with my adorable walking companion Barley, the four-pound Yorkie. Having spent a significant length of time away from Winnipeg, I really noticed all of the things that I’d taken for granted before: our wonderful old buildings, our amazing amounts of arts and culture, our world-class restaurants, our great coffee shops and our jam-packed schedule of events year-round! I fell in love!
In all of my exploring downtown, I couldn’t help but notice all of the hard work done by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. After reading everything I could on their website, I decided to volunteer and helped them out with a few events. From there, I led a number of the Downtown Tours in the 2015 season … and even more this year! I love that I get to share my love of Downtown Winnipeg each time I lead a tour.
As the tour guide for the Downtown Winnipeg Tours, I get to meet a great cross-section of Winnipeggers and tourists new to our city. I get to join in on participants’ birthday celebrations, girls-nights-out, stags and stagettes. One of my favourite things is having participants from previous tours get a large group of their friends together and come on other tours! It’s always so great to see familiar faces at each tour!
If I had to pick my favourite tour to give – I’d have to say that it would be the Tap In Tours. They were the ones that I did the most of in the 2015 season, so I kind of feel like they’re my baby. Also….there’s beer!
One of my favourite things to do while walking downtown is to photograph all of the beautiful things that I see around me—the way the sun lights up the limestone buildings as it sets, the mist that changes colour at night in the Empty-ful art piece, the great symmetry of the clock tower in Portage Place and the Christmas lights reflected in the skywalks. My Instagram is really a daily visual love letter to Downtown Winnipeg. You can follow my downtown adventures on Instagram @broken_down_chevy.
